Atelier-Vidal Ltd’s design mandate was to extensively re-imagine and renovate a partially completed private villa, with the main challenge of unifying the design elements to reduce the scale of the building.
The re-design of this private villa on the ocean front of San San is focused on increasing the permeability of the existing volumes in order to facilitate a greater relationship between the indoors and outdoors. The public spaces on the ground floor are designed to be highly responsive to the context in the material selection and visual access to prominent landmarks such as Pellew Island, while the upper floor’s private spaces are focused on maintaining the privacy and security desired by the Client. The existing buildings vary in scale with multiple internal level changes, the design’s intent was to unify the elements to reduce the scale of the building, while maintaining the presence and linearity of the building. This was achieved through a brise soleil connecting the forms, and providing a visual break between the walls and roof canopy.
