Atelier-Vidal Ltd. received the Governor General’s Award of Merit for Resort Design, 2014, for it’s work on the Trident Hotel.
The Trident Hotel, Portland, was operational during the latter part of the 20th Century before it was closed in 2005 for extensive renovations under the direction of the sophisticated Jamaican / Canadian Investor Michael Lee-Chin. Renovations began with designs from award winning Architect Marvin Goodman FAIA FJIA before construction stopped in 2008 due to the global financial crisis. In 2012, Lee-Chin together with Jon Baker of the exclusive Portland Hotel Geejam commissioned Atelier-Vidal to formulate designs for the rebranding and redevelopment of the incomplete buildings in order to meet a new design brief. The concept for the redesign involves the juxtaposition of contrasting architectural styles, whereas the exteriors of the incomplete buildings were finished in the Jamaican Georgian style and the interiors and certain elements of the exterior were reinterpreted to a Tropical Contemporary style. The design was refocused on offering extremely high-end luxury for the sophisticated traveler with a need for minimalist spaces and high privacy, inspired by the contextual and climatic influences the natural environment has on a man-made construct.
