A complete renovation of one of San San’s most picturesque properties, the functional program of the existing house was flipped along the central axis as a key generator for the design.
The Panorama Villa is one of San San’s most picturesque properties, as the name suggests, it offers panoramic views of the entire San San coastline to the north as well as the Blue Mountains to the south. Simply, the existing house consisted of a main central living area, which was a pivot for a service wing to the east and bedroom wing to the south-west. The non-structural components of the existing house had aged to a point beyond repair, and the new design brief called for enlarged bedrooms and a more functional kitchen. The decision was made to flip the program of the house, moving the bedrooms to the east whereby views of the ocean were possible, and the service area to the south-west wing. This involved a complete gutting of the interior, while most of the external walls were kept. The core of the decision making was to keep the recognizable lines of the house intact, while introducing linear elements, such as sun screens and larger openings for sliding / folding doors, to emphasize the horizontality of the house.
